Subject: love my Adam

My slightly belated thanks to those of you who offered
suggestions about disc drive repair. Haven't managed to get it
done yet (see below) but your support has been much appreciated.
Mainly over the past few weeks I have been doing things with my
DOSbox. I got the Yellow Pages on CD from Bell. But when I in-
stalled it, it put in QuickTime - in a way that if you tried to
use it, the whole computer froze so hard only a hard reset would
thaw things. Their tech support spent hours of phone coaching
determining that everything was absolutely perfect and should
work. I decided to take it off but there was no uninstall
program. I tried an email to Apple but no reply. Finally got one
from my ISP who is very helpful about such things. But I don't
have problems like that with Adam!
Spent some time partitioning my hard drive - mostly a couple of
days getting stuck in unbootable partitions or finding I could no
longer access my hidden partition. Now I do have both Windows
3.1 and Windows 95 up and running, for the moment. Good old Adam;
you just pick the O/S you want at the moment and boot it in - no
hassles. And if you have a hard disc you switch at the press of a
button (God bless Tony and Guy). Why have we forgotten the better
way over all these years?

No sooner had things set up than I was working away and strange
noises and that blue smoke smell started coming out of the com-
puter. Shut it down and took it to the vendor. Put it on the
bench and everything ran perfectly. His only possible advice?
Keep driving it till it breaks, then we'll find out what's
wrong. Oh well, it's still under warranty so the blue smoke is
on his dime. At least when Adam generates blue smoke, the cause
is pretty easily tracable. Life was so much simpler with Coleco.
It's not that I don't appreciate all the neat stuff Wintel can
do for me. But they can be pretty trying as co-workers. The
world still needs a friendly computer. Love my Adam. - Rich
